TWO JOHNS TAPHOUSE REBRAND

Visual Design | Branding, Logo, Photo Shoot & Print Materials

Design Brief

During my time working with SSP Asia Pacific, a global leader in the travel F&B industry, I had the opportunity to lead the rebrand of Two Johns Taphouse, one of SSP’s own branded concepts located at Melbourne Airport.

Two Johns Taphouse offers simple, hearty Western fare and craft beer, with a brand personality that is straightforward, energetic, and distinctly masculine. The rebrand aimed to modernize the brand while appealing to its core target audience—primarily male travelers seeking a casual but bold dining experience.

Food Styling

I was responsible for the complete visual overhaul of the restaurant, starting from the ground up. One of the first key steps was conducting research and developing a new food styling direction.

For the new food styling, I focused on using clean composition, thoughtful lighting, and a tidy, contemporary environment to reflect the brand’s refreshed personality. These updated visuals set the tone for the rest of the rebrand, shaping the design language across all materials. This early creative direction became the foundation for the restaurant’s new identity—visually engaging, approachable, and true to the casual yet confident spirit of Two Johns Taphouse.

Logo and Color theme

The previous logo used a bright yellow and navy-dark blue color scheme, paired with a minimalist illustrative mark—a combination that felt mismatched and visually jarring. It lacked coherence and didn’t reflect the bold yet approachable identity the brand aspired to.

In the rebrand, I introduced a refined palette of deep green and teal, these colors provide a sense of depth and energy, while also allowing the food photography and beer selections to take visual focus.

Print Production & Menu Design

The new food styling played a transformative role in elevating the brand’s presentation and directly influenced the print design strategy. Understanding that the target audience—primarily male customers—preferred a direct and straightforward approach, I designed a clean, visually digestible menu with a dark green background to reduce harsh contrast and support easy readability.

For promotional materials, I used a teal and cream color combination to create stronger visual contrast and draw attention to key offers. I also developed a set of modular poster templates to allow the restaurant team to quickly produce consistent, on-brand promotional graphics in-house. In the fast-paced context of an airport fast food setting, these signature templates provided both visual impact and operational efficiency, aligning with the business needs of SSP and the fast-moving nature of the brand.

Sub Logo design

Following the successful rebrand of Two Johns Taphouse, SSP entrusted me with the development of a new visual identity for its subsidiary brand, Little Johns. While connected in name, Little Johns required a completely fresh image to reflect its focus on a younger, trend-conscious customer base.

To differentiate it from the bold, masculine energy of Two Johns, I established a lighter, fresher visual tone using a light green and cream color palette. These colors evoke a sense of youthfulness, approachability, and vibrancy—qualities aligned with the brand’s personality.

In contrast to Two Johns’ logo, which features a beer mug to appeal to its older, male clientele, I designed the Little Johns logo around a bottled beer icon—a visual cue that speaks more to young adults and casual social drinkers. This allowed the new sub-brand to maintain a connection to the parent brand while establishing its own unique identity in both tone and aesthetics.

Interial Design

In addition to branding and print, I was fortunate to take on a larger role in visual merchandising for Little Johns. I worked closely with the team to help shape the in-store experience, even during the early stages when the menu was still under development.

With only the knowledge that beer and pizza would be the core offerings.

I combined natural wood textures with high-impact, graphic posters on the walls. This contrast added warmth while keeping the space visually dynamic—perfect for attracting younger, energetic customers.

Drink menu - Night

The menu design for Little Johns needed to reflect its dual personality: a relaxed café by day, and a lively bar by night, with pizza and alcoholic beverages as the brand’s core offerings. Since the brand targets young adult customers, I adopted a more playful, vibrant design approach than its parent brand, Two Johns.

While maintaining a consistent color palette—light green and cream—I introduced hand-drawn illustrations, casual typography, and a modular layout to give the menu a fresh, energetic vibe. These illustrated elements made the offerings feel more dynamic and approachable, especially for younger patrons.

The result was a visually engaging and functional menu that successfully captures the brand’s flexible day-to-night identity. Despite using a similar color theme to Two Johns, I was able to deliver a distinct and original visual experience, reinforcing Little Johns as a unique yet connected extension of the SSP brand family.
