Student Project —
SCAD Graduation Work
The Making of Friends from the Beyond

Design Brief
A darkly whimsical, Tim Burton–inspired story about a lonely girl who uses a magic book to bring a ghost boy back to life for his birthday party. This project explores the creative process behind the story, including character design, animation, environment, and narrative development.

Cover & Back Cover Design
Although I wasn’t the art director, I embraced a “Tim Burton” inspired style—different from my usual approach—to design the cover and back cover. The cover depicts the girl holding hands with the ghost boy, while the back cover poignantly shows her waiting alone for a birthday party guest who never arrives. This project marked the beginning of my passion for publishing design.

Typography
To capture the story’s dark and eerie atmosphere, I selected a horror-inspired, hand-drawn font for titles and headings, adding expressive mood fitting the narrative. For body text, I used a clean, formal font to ensure readability and comfort.
Layout
For this book, I focused less on detailed layout design and more on deciding which illustrations best fit each part of the story. My priority was to ensure the visuals aligned closely with the animation’s style and narrative, creating a cohesive experience between the book and its animated counterpart.

Project Structure

The book is primarily visual and focuses on illustrating the making of the story. I divided it into sections such as Story, Characters, Animation, and Environment, creating original drawings for each. My priority was to align the visuals with the animation’s style and narrative, rather than focusing on complex layout details.
Content Page

I carefully selected images and materials from all teammates, organizing a large amount of information clearly to present how we created the movie, it is really interesting while choosing what our team has done and make it a book to present.
Why I Include This Project
Although this was a student project and less polished than my professional work, it represents the foundation of my passion for publishing design. It showcases my early skills in visual storytelling, illustration, and book creation. Including this piece demonstrates my creative growth and versatility, giving potential employers insight into my design journey and commitment to developing meaningful, narrative-driven work.
